In-Person Education Programs

The programs described on this page all have an in-person portion to them - a workshop date, with other in-person mentoring while we are in your community.

Outcomes Focused

All educational programs at the Community-Driven Institute are outcomes-driven. Whether you are seeking education for an individual board of directors or you are the sponsor of a community-wide educational effort, our first step is to work with you to determine what outcomes you want from the work we will do together. What do you want to be different when we are through? (For more about this approach, see the articles in our Education Library)

From there, we will work with you to craft a scope of work to accomplish the outcomes you are seeking, in a format that will work for your group. (See more about the scope of work below in the "Program Format" section.)

Six months after the event, the Institute Team will survey attendees, to measure the results against the outcomes that were predefined by the sponsor.

Principles of the
Community-Driven Institute

Both the content and format of all programs taught by the Institute are aligned behind the following core principles:

The Ends:

#1 We accomplish what we hold ourselves accountable for.

#2 Each and every one of us is creating the future, every day, whether we do so consciously or not.

The approaches we teach therefore show organizational leaders how to hold themselves accountable for creating significant results for the communities they serve.

The Means:

#3 Everyone and everything is interconnected and interdependent.

The approaches we teach are therefore all cooperative. We do not teach competitive approaches. We teach that the single most valuable resource Community Benefit Organizations and leaders have is each other and other caring individuals in their community.

#4 Walking Our Talk is the antidote to rationalizing our actions.

The approaches we teach are therefore all values-based.

#5 Strength builds upon our strengths, not our weaknesses.

The approaches we teach therefore emphasize identifying and engaging existing (yet often overlooked) assets and resources within each organization and their surrounding community. We do not teach how to "compete for scarce resources," but rather how to build and sustain programs through shared resources and high levels of community engagement.

#6 Individuals will go where systems point them.

The approaches we teach provide complete thought systems rooted in this set of core philosophies, rather than providing a disembodied group of how-to tasks. This is done to make it as easy as possible for organizational leaders to initiate and maintain these systems once the instructor is gone, and to recognize the best decision when new issues arise.

All the approaches we teach align behind the Institute's core principles and philosophies (see box at right). Our programs all focus on accountability for creating significant, visionary impact in the community you serve. They then align organizational means behind those end results.

Our education topics are all practical, as that is the mission of the Community-Driven Institute - to support the visionary work done by organizations across the whole sector, to make thatvisionary work as practical as possible.

Program Format

Before and After Contact

Via email discussion groups, teleconferences and other technology, programs begin with thought-starter discussions, and include follow-up Q&A capability forever. Really - forever. Because being able to ask a teacher a follow-up question when one needs it most is the only way to create the outcomes you want!

Highly Interactive and Hands-On

Workshops themselves are hands-on and highly interactive. In single-board settings, the group begins developing systems immediately, during the workshop itself, as the workshop becomes a mini-planning session for whatever topic is taught.

In community-wide settings, workshops are taught as "shared facilitations." Portions of the material are taught via facilitated small-and-large group discussions between representatives of unrelated organizations. This approach begins the process of building trust and cooperation immediately.

In addition, attendees have plenty of focused organizational work time, to immediately apply what they learn to their own issues in a more proprietary manner. For this reason, at community-wide programs, organizations are strongly urged to have more than one representative attend, as attendees will be working on actual projects from their organization.

Building a Culture of Learning - The Learning Community

In community-wide workshops, attendees are encouraged to reflect and share their learnings throughout the day, to create the beginnings of a Learning Community. Following each live workshop, follow-up gatherings are held, to best ensure the culture of the Learning Community continues.

In single-board settings, the groundwork is also laid for the board to become a Learning Community, encouraging reflection and discovery as part of the ongoing discussion.

Workbooks and Worksheets Handouts

Handouts for our live programs are provided as a workbook. The workbook includes forms, checklists, and how-to steps for immediate use.

In the event worksheets are used during the session, those worksheets are blueprint-sized, to encourage groups to have the space to work together.

Price

Because each in-person educational program is tailored specifically to the desired outcomes and the parameters of each group, prices vary for this work.

Any price quoted by the Institute will be a flat fee, inclusive of all travel expenses and all production expenses. Providing a flat fee, with all costs known up front and no extras tacked on, makes it easier for community-wide programs to find co-sponsors for the program. It also makes it easier for an individual board to have a fixed price to provide to a funder or donor they may be approaching to cover the expenses of their board's education.
